Women V Cancer

Caroline Trotter is raising money for Women V Cancer

In 2013, I was diagnosed with cervical cancer.  To be honest, I couldn’t quite believe what I was hearing.  Once I had accepted the diagnosis, I was scared.  Cancer was something that sadly other people were blighted by, not me! Now three years later I have been told I’m ‘cured’.  Such wonderful news for me and my family and not a day goes by when I don’t consider myself one of the very lucky ones.

In November/December 2016, I will be part of an amazing group of women tackling the sixth WomenVCancer challenge.  We will be testing ourselves as part of a women only team cycling from Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam) to Angkhor Wat (Cambodia). The ride is over 400kms and will take 6 days with the hardest day of 68kms being the second to last day. My cycling experience is limited having not really ridden a bike since I was 18 years and the idea of cycling this distance on potholed roads and tracks, in 27C and high humidity certainly focused the mind.  As a result I have put a fitness regime in place, requiring two sessions in the gym with a personal trainer and two rides per week.  I thought I was fit until I started all this!

WomenVCancer organise events such as this to raise awareness and much needed funds to support Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust, Breast Cancer Care and Ovarian Cancer Action. There are over 100 women taking part although I’m in a team of four, the other three being friends whose families have all been touched by the horrors of cancer. As a cancer survivor, I would like to raise funds for these three great charities and to raise awareness.  Often the secret to beating cancer is early diagnosis; if ever anyone is unsure about a change in their body, they must visit their GP as soon as possible. I did and that’s why I’m able to take on this challenge. All the money that we raise will go direct to the charity as we have paid all our own expenses.
