Description
The Quest Expedition to Antartica was Sir Ernest Shackleton’s last trip south during which he planned to circumnavigate the continent.
He died on the way down on 5th January 1922 from a heart attack whilst anchored off South Georgia.
He was just 47 years old.
His grave can be found in the churchyard at Grytviken, South Georgia.
This trinket box is decorated with an image of Sir Ernest Shackleton created by the late James Butler MBE RA on the lid.
It also has a quote from Sir Ernest on the lid ‘By endurance we conquer’ and around the waist of the trinket box is a second quote ‘Optimism is true moral courage’
On the inside base Susan has drawn an image of ‘The Quest’.
She was the polar expedition vessel of the Shackleton-Rowett Expedition of 1921–1922.
