A mug designed in memory of the great explorer Frank Wild.
Frank Wild, a relatively unknown giant of the “Heroic Age” of Antarctic exploration, worked with several of the noted explorers of the Antarctic including Sir Ernest Shackleton who selected him twice to work with him – once on the Nimrod Expedition in the early 1900’s and then as second in command to Shackleton on the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition from 1914-1917. When the Endurance sank in mid-ocean it was Wild who remained in charge on Elephant Island for nearly 4 months whilst the great explorer, Ernest Shackleton, went to get help.
Wild is only one of two people to be awarded the Polar Medal with 4 bars – awarded for extreme human endeavour in both the Arctic and the Antarctic.
There is much to admire and celebrate about this age of polar exploration with the great men of Captain Robert Scott, Sir Ernest Shackleton and Frank Wild to name but a few – all of whom are represented on our website on our polar pages.
We have also been fortunate to work with Angie Butler who runs the Ice-Tracks company taking interested people, like Susan, on discovery trips to both the polar regions. Angie has also written a biography on Frank Wild and we also persuaded her to write a blog for our website; you can check this out here – Frank Wild Polar Explorer
